What goes wrong at a party in Maarn, and how I handle it

  I set up at least 1.5 hours before the start, with a soundcheck and lighting check before the first guest arrives. That is set down in the booking confirmation.

  How I solve it

  From the first email to the packing away you have one point of contact: me. I agree the running order with the venue, the caterer and the master of ceremonies.

Parties in Maarn

In wooded surroundings sound carries further in the evening than during the day, particularly once the wind drops. Municipalities on the Heuvelrug are strict about it. I use a directional rig that serves the dance floor rather than the woods, which keeps the party full on the floor and stops somebody coming over halfway through to ask for it to be turned down.

Where I play in Maarn

Around Maarn and Maarsbergen there are estate venues, restaurants with a separate function room, club buildings and gardens at detached houses. Estate venues often have strict rules about fixings, finishing times and sound levels; I ask for those beforehand and work them into the running order.

Access and set-up

Via the N227 and the A12 the drive takes me about twenty minutes. The last few km run through wooded lanes, so send me the full address to make the route in clear in advance.

What I pay extra attention to in Maarn

On an estate the look of the set-up counts for as much as the sound. Black cabinets, cables tucked away under matting or tape, no loose flight cases in view. My set ought to be part of how the evening is dressed rather than cut straight through it.
